Praised for his “ravishing and simply gorgeous” performances in The Washington Post, pianist David Fung is widely recognized for interpretations that are elegant and refined, yet intensely poetic and uncommonly expressive.
With a repertoire of over sixty concertos, Mr. Fung is a regular soloist with the world’s premier ensembles including the Cleveland Orchestra, the Detroit Symphony, the Israel Philharmonic, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the San Francisco Symphony, and the major orchestras in Australia including the Melbourne, Queensland, Sydney Symphony Orchestras, working with conductors such as Marin Alsop, Gustavo Dudamel, Michael Francis, Stanislav Kochanovsky, Lan Shui, and Christian Zacharias. An incisive interpreter of Mozart and Bach, Mr. Fung has collaborated with the Israel, Los Angeles, Melbourne, Orpheus, and Saint Paul Chamber Orchestras, and the Orchestra of St. Luke’s.
He has captivated audiences at such venues as Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, the Louvre, Gewandhaus, Palais des Beaux-Arts, and Zürich Tonhalle, as well as the major halls in Asia, including the Beijing Concert Hall, Guangzhou Opera House, Hong Kong Town Hall, Seoul Art Center, Shanghai Oriental Art Center, Taiwan National Concert Hall, and the Tianjin Grand Theater. Notable festival appearances include Aspen, Blossom, Caramoor, Edinburgh, Hong Kong Arts, and Ravinia Festival.
Mr. Fung garnered international attention as laureate of the Queen Elisabeth International Music Competition in Brussels and the Arthur Rubinstein Piano International Masters Competition in Tel Aviv, where he was further distinguished by the Chamber Music and Mozart Prizes.
He is the first piano graduate of the Colburn Conservatory in Los Angeles, where he studied with John Perry, and later worked with Peter Frankl, Claude Frank and Arie Vardi at Yale University and the Hannover Hochschüle. Mr. Fung is a curator at the Chan Center for the Performing Arts in Vancouver and serves on the faculties of the Manhattan School of Music and the University of British Columbia. Mr. Fung is a Steinway Artist.
Mr. Fung is represented in the Americas by Arabella Arts, Australia and New Zealand by Cinque Artist Management, and in China, Hong Kong and Taiwan by QLHW Management Ltd.
David Fung has given masterclasses at leading institutions in the United States including the Colburn School, Duke University, Eastman School of Music, Florida State University, Juilliard School, Manhattan School of Music, Northwestern University, and the Yale School of Music, and internationally at the Central Conservatory of Music (China), Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, Hong Kong Baptist University, National Taiwan Normal University, National Taiwan University of the Arts, the Royal Conservatory of Music (Canada), the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, and the University of New South Wales (Australia).
A frequent adjudicator of competitions, Mr. Fung served as a jury member for the United States finals of the Steinway & Sons Piano Competition, the MTNA competitions, the finals of the Yale School of Music Concerto Competition, the Southeast Piano Competition, the finals of the 2MBS Fine Music Young Virtuoso Award in Australia, the Bader & Overton Canadian Piano Competition, the Vancouver International Music Festival, and the Australian Music Foundation Scholarships in New York.
His students have been awarded top prizes at numerous competitions including the New York International Artist Competition, Vancouver International Music Competition, Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition, as well as the ENKOR, Vivo, Metropolitan, Southeastern, Music Teachers National Association and Canadian Music competitions.
Mr. Fung has served as Artist-Faculty at the Anchorage Chamber Music Festival, Atlantic Music Festival, Euro Arts Music Festival, Festival de Febrero, Lake George Music Festival, MusicFest Perugia, Orford Music, and Piano Week (United Kingdom) where he was a special guest artist. He was recently Artist in Residence at the Hong Kong Arts Festival, where he gave a number of lectures and masterclasses in addition to his recitals at Shatin Town Hall and Hong Kong City Hall.
Mr. Fung previously taught piano and chamber music at Yale University, served as associate professor at the University of Georgia Hugh Hodgson School of Music, and is currently on the faculties of the Manhattan School of Music and at the University of British Columbia.
